The game:

Escape Room is an exciting maze-adventure game for Commodore 64.

Player will have certain amount of time to solve the maze in the total darkness using torch light only.  Torch has limited range and player can't see through the maze walls.  Torch range is shortening as the battery is draining. There are colored doors in the maze, and to open a door player must search for the keys from the maze. There are also traps whose needs to  be defused by solving direction patterns in the mini game.  Failing the mini game gives electric shock that reduces health a lot and successful defusing restores health a bit.

How many mazes you can solve?!

Game playing:

Move using joystick in port 1 or 2, Pushing up moves forward and pulling down moves backward. Left and Right turns and can be used to look around.  All items (keys, doors, switches and traps) can be seen only with torch light. Pick up keys by moving over. Switch can be turned by pressing fire button at the switch. When all switches are turned on, lights will turn on and maze will be visible but you will still need the torch light to find out the items. Doors will open with the key having same color. Door opens moving towards it. Traps activates when player moves to close, so at sometimes they can be avoided moving not too close to them. If trap activates, there is 10 seconds to start defusing the trap by playing a mini game. If mini game is not started trap will give an electric shock which reduces health. In the mini game player has to memorize the played direction pattern and replay it. Failing causes the same electric shock as when mini game is  not being played but successful playing of the mini game gives little bit health back. If health runs out, game ends. Also if timer runs out, game ends. If battery runs out it affects only torch reach.

Features:

  • Real time ray casting of the torch
  • Three difficulty levels, easy, medium and hard (will be added later)
  • Lots of  mazes for solving (will be added later). Final version can have up to 600 mazes to play.
  • Optional trailing that shows where player has moved during the game
  • Very catchy music and sound effects
  • Saved high scores  (will be added later)
  • Separate map editor (will be available later)

Very good! :-)

Because V1.0 in Zzap64! Magazine was so buggy and unstable. I did latest feature additions in memory constraints beyond belief. Game uses entire 64kB memory. I'll push out more bugfixed version soonish. You are very welcome to come giving feedback and reporting bugs in my development stream at https://twitch.tv/proton_fig

If you have memory problems, Krill's loader may not be a good choice. Covert Bitops loader is often used in games.

Thanks for the feedback. Krill's loader just works. and the resident part of it fits in one memory page. It also supports unloading, so high score saving works. Realtime raycasting of the torch light uses more than 25 kilos of memory. Then all graphics eats memory twice because of the double buffering. Musics use 5 kilos etc.  And what comes to the loader, I have also my own loaders. Source code is for the IRQ-loader only. I wrote one of the world first IRQ loaders around 1987-1988. But Krill has done everything ready and packed it nicely.

Clever concept to a traditional C64 maze game. Cool tricks. Great atmospheric music. I hope you can get this game  finished. Well done Proton :)

Sure I will finish it shortly. I just started working with this game 2 weeks ago. I'm having some issues to fit everything in the memory but I will find a way.

Developing of this game can be watched online on my Twitch channel.

New preview:

Congrats! You did it! :) That looked much better than previous.

Cool concept. Fun game! Looking forward to final version.

Thanks.

Nice game!

Thanks for reviewing, even the game seem to had some critical bugs. You could retry with an updated preview.
